Roles and Responsibilities of the Erie County Planning Commission

The Erie County Planning Commission assists the Department of Planning and Community Development
with the preparation of a comprehensive plan for the county. The Pennsylvania Municipalities
Planning Code, Act 24 7 of 1968 requires that counties review and update each component of the
County Comprehensive Plan every 10 years. The Planning Commission makes recommendations about
zoning, subdivisions and land development ordinances and amendments.

The commission consists of nine appointed members and up to three alternates. The commissioner’s
responsibility is to advocate for the best interests of all community members regarding land use
and development policy and projects. Effective Planning Commissioners share useful information and
knowledge that could impact present and future land uses of Erie County.
The Erie County Planning Department facilitates the Planning Commission meetings and actions and
provides capacity and expertise in planning and land use to the County and municipal governments.
